Academician Andrei Andriesh was born on October 24, 1933 in Chisinau. He graduated the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of the Moldova State University (Chisinau, 1956), and obtained the PhD degree in physics and mathematics at the Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute (St. Petersburg, 1963).

Academician Andrei Andriesh was honored to work in the area of non-crystalline semiconductors in collaboration with a distinguished soviet scientist professor B.T.Kolomiets; a prolific American inventor and scientist S.R.Ovshinsky, Fellow of the American Physical Society and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; professor Radu Grigorovici, member of the Romanian Academy, and, last but not least, Sir N.F.Mott, an English physicist who won the Nobel Prize for Physics (1977). Academician Andriesh was the founder of the scientific school in the physics of non-crystalline semiconductor in Moldova. Non-crystalline semiconductors are a group of materials with physical properties different from those of crystalline semiconductors due to a disordered structure of atomic network in these materials. Chalcogenide glasses belong to this group, they are transparent in the IR region of the spectrum and are a promising material for different applications in photonics, optoelectronics, holography, and integrated optics. Academician Andrei Andriesh initiated the systematic investigations of electrical, photoelectrical and optical properties of bulk materials, amorphous thin films and optical fibers from chalcogenide glasses in Moldova. The achievements of Academician Andriesh were officially recognized in the Republic of Moldova twice, in 1982 and 2002, when he was awarded the State Prize of the Republic of Moldova in Science, Technology and Production. The second Prize was shares with his disciples for achievements in the area of new optoelectronic materials and technologies on the base of non-crystalline semiconductors. Due to the significant scientific results he became the winner (2005) of the “Stanford R.Ovshinsky Prize for Excellence in Amorphous Chalcogenides”, for his contributions to optoelectronics, optical recording of information, non-linear optics, and optical fibers based on chalcogenides.

In the last years of his activity academician Andriesh initiated the development and investigation of new organic/inorganic nanostructured composite materials. These materials are very attractive for future implementations of novel photonic and optoelectronic devices. Academician Andrei Andriesh is the author and a coauthor of 6 monographs, about 500 scientific papers and 30 patents.

Professor Andrei Andries was the scientific consultant of S.D.Shutov, M.S.Iovu, D.I.Tsiuleanu, V.N.Chumash, N.A.Enaki, A.I.Buzdugan, A.A.Popescu in preparing their doctor habilitate dissertations, the scientific adviser of M.A.Iovu, V.V.Bivol, V.G.Abașchin, E.P.Colomeico, I.P.Culeac, M.R.Cernii, E.A.Achimova, I.A.Cojocaru, V.N.Dolghieru, S.A.Malkov, V.I.Verlan, E.G.Hancevskaya, N.A.Gumeniuc, and D.V.Harea in preparing their PhD dissertations.

Academician Andrei Andriesh was a Member of the Engineering Academy of the Russian Federation, Corresponding Member of the Austrian Society Albert Schweitzer-Gesellschaft Modling, Member of the European Academy of Arts, Honorary Member of the Romanian Academy of Sciences, President of the SPIE-Moldova Society, Honorary Member of the American-Romanian Academy, and Doctor Honoris Causa of the Polytechnic University from Bucharest. Academician Andriesh was awarded with the title „Om Emerit” (persona Emeritus). He was the holder of the two Orders „Insigna de Onoare” (Order of the Badge of Honour), the Order „Ordinul Republicii” (“Order of the Republic”, Moldova’s highest order), „Academician S. I. Vavilov” medal, the Prize „C. Miculescu” for Physics of the Romanian Academy.
